Les “gilets jaunes”, yellow vests, protesters enter the Saturday outdoor market, in what is normally a tranquil town, Fontenay Le Comte in central west France. This is a part of a numerous series of protests, demonstrations and roadblocks across France. One of the group of yellow vests holds a placard with the words “Macron Faux Jeton Démission” ‘false Macron must go’, another protester waves a French flag. Then an accordionist plays and the protesters sing the French national anthem. The protesters are campaigning against a fuel tax hike and other related taxes and economic factors that are impoverishing or causing difficulties for people in the lower and middling economic bracket, tax increases that are perhaps seen as funding tax cuts for the very rich.
