Brian Haw & Mark Wallinger out side Tate Britain. Brian Haw began protesting in Parliament Square June 2001. In 2005 Parliament passed the ‘Serious Organised Crime and Police Act’ SOCPA. Section 132 made it an offence to organise or take part in a public protest within a one-kilometre radius of Parliament Square. On the night of 23 May 2006, the police removed most of Brian Haw placards and personal items. Since then he has been permitted to occupy a very reduced size demonstration. However, artist, Mark Wallinger, “State Britain” near by exhibition, consists of a careful reconstruction of the Brian Haw protest as it was before curtailment. A taped line on the floor, which continues throughout the building, marks the very edge of the one-kilometre Exclusion Zone as understood by the artist. Artist Mark Wallinger, State Britain extends both sides of the line! The exhibition runs until the 27 August 07. London, UK, 14th January 2007
