Joe Lauria editor-in-chief of Consortium News, has just presented the, Gary Webb Freedom of the Press Award, posthumously, for John Pilger (1939 - 2023), which he has handed to Pilger’s partner Jane Hill. She addresses the audience, in presence of his son Sam Pilger standing behind her, and granddaughter who is now proudly holding the award of her grandfather. The “Gary Webb Freedom of the Press Award for John Richard Pilger, journalist, filmmaker, author, for a lifetime of exposing injustice / afflicting the powerful and defending Press Freedom in his films, books and articles. Presented by Consortium for Independent Journalism” Joe Lauria was able to tell John Pilger that he had won the award before his death. On Joe Lauria’s right seated are, Ken Loach film / TV director, Victoria Brittain editor / journalist, Christopher Hird producer of last four of John Pilger’s films at Dartmouth Films, Richard Creasey, former head of documentaries at ATV Central Independent TV who also worked with John Pilger, and Anthony Hayward, journalist and author hosting the BFI event at the NFT.
