Homer

Homer, his portrait in marble, a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original created in 2nd Century BC. It was acquired by the British Museum in 1805. Now displayed within the major exhibition “Troy myth and reality” at the British Museum. The representation of Homer must be assumed to be from the Hellenistic sculptor’s imagination because it was created so many centuries after Homer’s period 8th century bc. Homer, the epic poet, is traditionally held to be the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. However, there is a scholastic challenge, an ambiguity about the authorship of the Iliad and the Odyssey, because it can be viewed as stemming from a pre-literate, oral tradition. What we do know, is that the Iliad and the Odysseys have been hugely influential stories on literature ever since. Bloomsbury, London, UK, photo 28/11/2019
