Alexandra David-Néel (1868 - 1969) French explorer, Buddhist and author best know for becoming the first European lady to enter the forbidden city (to foreigners) Lhasa in 1923. When making this journey she was age fifty-four disguised as a Tibetan pilgrim beggar and having learnt the Tibetan language. Alexandra David-Néel traveled and lived in India, Sikkim, Bhutan, Tibet, China, Korea, Japan and more, studying and practicing Buddhism. The author has written numerous books on Eastern religion, customs and her travels. When you read her travel books you travel with her. Her writing has influenced the American beat writers such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and more. 'Samten dzong' the name of Alexandra David-Néel house, now part of a museum.
