MUGWUMP: noun North American word, for an independent person who remains above petty party politics. Originates in 19th century.: from Algonquian mugquomp ‘great chief’, or a chief who can give ‘strong and stable leadership'.
PS: Boris Johnson foreign secretary called the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn a "mutton-headed, old mugwump" but may have been confused as to the meaning of the word he used mugwump, assuming it was insulting because he himself had been called that a year earlier.
